"Operation Lion Heart" Central Java Earthquake - Situation Update 8 (Medical & Humanitarian Relief)
While long-term recovery operations are gradually replacing search efforts in the quake-hit city of Yogyakarta, the 54-member SCDF contingent remains there to render the local authorities support in areas of medical care, info-communications and logistical management of humanitarian relief.
Medical personnel from the SCDF comprising 1 doctor, 6 paramedics and 1 rescue section continue to be stationed at the Senopati Bantul District Hospital for casualty treatment and stabilisation support. In addition, 1 rescue section and 4 paramedics have been deployed to assist the Mobile Medical Team in providing care and treatment for casualties in areas without medical facilities. Another rescue section is tasked with supporting the Field Medical Station.
A total of 117 casualties had been treated by the SCDF personnel at the district hospital since the supporting 11-member medical team arrived last Wednesday to reinforce the SAF-SCDF medical contingent. Together with the 134 casualties that were treated at both the Field Medical Station and the Mobile Medical Team, this brings the total number of casualties treated to date by the SCDF contingent to 251.
Meanwhile, increasing international relief supplies are arriving in Yogyakarta through both the Solo and Adisutjipto Airports, requiring massive coordinating efforts. SCDF"s UNDAC representative, MAJ Alan Toh continues to facilitate and manage the influx of these relief items meant for the tens of thousands of survivors in the disaster-hit areas.
Two other officers who form SCDF"s APHP (Asia-Pacific Humanitarian Partnership) team have also consolidated its support at the UN Reception Centre in Adisutjipto Airport. In addition to the assistance in maintaining the communications capabilities of the centre, the team is also helping to monitor the incoming of relief teams, which will help enhance UNDAC"s liaison and coordination of the overall relief efforts.
