Road Traffic Accident at Junction of Woodlands Ave 4 & 7
20 January 2006

On 19 January 2006 at 11.51pm, a Red Rhino from Woodlands Fire Station which was responding to a fire call, with both the beacon lights and sirens on, when an accident happened involving a taxi and a saloon car. The incident occurred at the cross junction of Woodlands Avenue 4 & 7. There were 4 SCDF personnel on board the Red Rhino at the time of the collision.

As a result of the accident, the Red Rhino overturned, trapping two of the SCDF officers, SGT Shaik Amran Bin Shaik Jamil (24), the Section Commander who drove the vehicle and LCP Farouk Bin Johari (21) a NSF fire fighter, underneath the vehicle. The other two officers, SGT Yusman Bin Mion (22) a Section Commander and LCP Muhammad Anuar Bin Ariffin (21) also a NSF fire fighter, were able to extricate themselves from the Red Rhino.

SGT Shaik Amran Bin Shaik Jamil, suffered serious multiple injuries and was pulled out of the Red Rhino by SGT Yusman prior to the arrival of SCDF"s rescue crew at the scene. SGT Shaik was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), together with LCP Muhammad Anuar.

SGT Shaik was pronounced dead by the medical team at TTSH soon after arrival. SGT Shaik joined the SCDF on 18 October 2004 and has made many positive contributions to the SCDF. He was a diligent worker who has earned the respect of his fellow colleagues through his exemplary conduct, attitude and performance. A diligent worker, he was pursuing his Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications and was expected to complete it in 2006.

The other personnel trapped, LCP Farouk Bin Johari was extricated by SCDF and was also conveyed to TTSH. SGT Yusman was subsequently conveyed to NUH. The taxi driver was also injured in the accident. In total, four casualties, including the taxi driver were conveyed to TTSH, and one casualty was conveyed to NUH in 3 SCDF ambulances. As a result of the accident, LCP Farouk sustained right hip and thigh injury and LCP Anuar sustained right facial abrasion. SGT Yusman experienced pain in his right thigh and has since been discharged.

SCDF is saddened by the unfortunate incident. Our officers have visited the bereaved family to convey SCDF"s condolences. We are extending every possible assistance and emotional support to the families of the staff involved in the accident.

This is the first fatality of an SCDF officer in the line of duty in recent times. SCDF is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The ceremonial funeral for the late SGT Shaik Amran Bin Shaik Jamil will be held on 20 Jan 06 at 3pm at the Pusara Abadi Muslim Cemetery (Block 26) at Lim Chu Kang.
