Earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal, 2015

On 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal near the capital city of Kathmandu, claiming nearly 9,000 lives and displacing many more.

For the first time, the Home Team fielded a joint contingent comprising 126 officers from SCDF and the Singapore Police Force for a disaster relief mission. SCDF's 60-member Operation Lionheart contingent, led by LTC Alvin Tan Teck Kai, was deployed to Kathmandu to assist in search and rescue efforts.

Upon arrival, the contingent set up its Base of Operations and was assigned to the Lalitpur and Gorkha districts. Due to the distance between these two districts, the contingent split into two self-sufficient teams and worked concurrently.

Throughout the deployment, two doctors and four trauma paramedics provided medical aid to the injured. Search and rescue, heli-evacuation and medical treatment was carried out by SCDF, SPF, RSAF and SAF over the two weeks.

Before their departure, the contingent donated humanitarian aid and medical supplies to support relief efforts in Nepal.
