Construction site incident along Oriole Crescent No. 16
On Wednesday, 18 January 2006 at 2028 hrs, the SCDF was alerted to a construction site incident at Oriole Crescent No.16. SCDF responded with a fire engine, a special rescue tender, a support appliance and an ambulance.
Upon arrival at the incident site, SCDF found a male adult casualty pinned under a large concrete slab. There were no signs of life from the casualty. The slab of about 25cm thickness measured approximately 3m in length and 1m in width, and weighed about ton.
SCDF swiftly secured and stabilised the collapsed structure with rescue jacks, air-bags and supporting struts. As loose parts of the structure were removed, members of the DART broke the larger fallen slab into smaller pieces with the pneumatic breaker. This was to gain immediate access to the victim, who was buried near the center of the slab.
After the victim was extricated, the SCDF paramedic immediately examined him and attempted to revive him. The victim was pronounced dead by the paramedic at the site soon after. The casualty was handed over to the Police. The extrication operation from the heavy fallen structures lasted about 1 hour.
