ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd Joint Operational Exercise on Jurong Island
29 August 2014

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd conducted a joint operational exercise on Jurong Island earlier today. Mr S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister"s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry, was present to observe the exercise which was held at ExxonMobil"s Singapore Refinery.

The exercise scenario involved the joint response by the SCDF and ExxonMobil"s in-house Company Emergency Response Team (CERT) to mitigate an oil tank fire. The exercise also involved the deployment of emergency resources from the mutual aid fire-fighting partners comprising various companies under the Oil, Petrochemical Industries Technical and Safety Committee (OPITSC).

Apart from testing the communication and coordination processes between SCDF, ExxonMobil and the OPITSC, the exercise allowed SCDF"s frontline forces to maintain their operational currency in deploying their fire-fighting assets, such as its large water-foam monitors, to mitigate an oil tank fire. For this exercise, two large water-foam monitors were deployed along with 120SCDF personnel and 30 SCDF emergency vehicles.

Quote by ExxonMobil Singapore Refinery Manager Boyd Barrilleaux:

"While we manage our business with the goal of preventing incidents, ExxonMobil places great emphasis on emergency response readiness, should they occur. Operating businesses and major sites, such as the refinery here, have trained teams that are routinely tested against a range of potential incident scenarios. We also periodically conduct joint exercises with the SCDF, such as the one we did today, as part of that training. Today"s exercise again reinforces the cooperation and capabilities of both the ExxonMobil and SCDF teams to respond effectively, if an incident occurs."
