At 6.50am this morning, the SCDF was alerted to a chemical spillage at Cemac Tong Pte Ltd, 14 Soon Lee Road. SCDF arrived at the scene within 5 minutes of activation with 2 fire engines, 2 Light Fire Attack Vehicles (Red Rhino), 1 ambulance and 4 support vehicles from Jurong, Tuas, Clementi, Jurong Island & Yishun Fire Stations.

Upon arrival, yellow fumes was seen issuing out of a rectangular tank (measuring about 1m in width, 4m in length and 1.5m in height). The tank, located at an open sided shed, was found to contain approximately 100 litres of nitric acid.

SCDF firefighters used 2 water jets to dilute the fumes from the tank. Simultaneously, officers in fully encapsulated HazMat suits set out to neutralize remnants of the acid within the tank and on the floor with soda ash (a form of neutralizing agent). The tank was then closed with a metal cover and sealed with plastic sheets to prevent further escape of fumes. The incident was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Nobody was reported injured as a result of the incident.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.
